Introducing our Staff...

Camp Fircom's Year Round Staff consists of three Community Coordinators, who work with the Volunteer Board of Directors to carry out the Fircom Mission.

Neil Carrodus
Neil Carrodus
Neil has worked in the camp office since 2005, and as a summer staff and volunteer since 1993.

Neil has taken classes in non-profit management at BCIT. He is currently studying Permaculture Site Design and Sustainable Agriculture at the UBC Farm, and 2004/5 he co-managed the Fircom Garden.

Since 2005, Neil has been working with the Fircom Property Development Initiative, leading work parties and caring for the site, protecting the needs of Fircom within larger Gambier Island development, and keeping the wheels of camp turning.

Neil is also particularly handy, and once turned the camp truck into a giant shark. His favorite of the 3-Rs is Reusing. Neil likes designing and building things, and growing vegetables, and has a marvelous gift for photography.

Neil is passionate about local food production, and dreams of having chickens at camp. Neil sees Fircom as a small scale model for how he wants to see the world work.

Christine Boyle
Christine Boyle
Chris has been involved with Fircom through Youth and Young Adult Ministries since 1999. In 2005, she worked as Camp Chaplain, and created spaces for kids and youth to engage spiritually.

Chris is currently working on an MA in Religious Leadership for Social Change, and holds a BSC in Urban Agriculture and First Nations Studies. Chris is also working with First United Church in Vancouvers Downtown Eastside. Previously, Chris worked at Grandview Elementary School to coordinate the School and Community Garden.

In her spare time, Chris can be found riding her bike around East Vancouver, and taking triple word scores in Scrabble.

Chris dreams of Fircom being a year-round retreat and sanctuary space for people working for social and environmental justice. She sees Fircom as a playful and inspiring space that calls us to deeper engagement with ourselves, each other, and the whole world.

Anna White
Anna White
Anna has been involved with Camp Fircom as a leader and staff person since 1994. She comes with a rounded experience of Camp, as an Arts and Crafts Co-Ordinator and Kitchen Staff person, as well as a Volunteer Chaplain, and a Property Volunteer.

As a self proclaimed "PK" or "Preacher's Kid", Anna also has great United Church experience on the congregational, presbytery, and Conference levels. It was through Church that Anna came to Fircom when she was 16.

Anna is currently working towards a BFA in Visual Arts with a goal of working in Community Education. She is a "Critical and Cultural Theory Nerd", and likes to relax with silly drawings.

On an average day off, Anna can be found hiking with her dogs in the woods, digging in her Garden, or clowning around. She never misses a chance to jump in the ocean.

Anna is inspired by being involved in community projects, like Fircom. She recognizes that Art, Education, and Spirituality are key to building healthy communities.

She has worked as a Mental Health Support Worker in the East Side of Vancouver for the past nine years, supporting residents with mental illness and housing issues, helping them to overcome obstacles, set goals, and achieve them.

Anna is excited to be working with Fircom! She sees United Church camping as a player in the future of the Church. She sees Fircom as a huge resource for all of Vancouver, as a model society, and wants to share it with more people!

Summer Staff

(Fircom will be hiring Summer Staff for 2011 in the Spring of 2011)

Summer Staff 2005 Camp Fircom's staff is dedicated to providing the best camping experience possible. Chosen for their experience, enthusiasm and special skills, Fircom's summer camp team models quality and caring leadership.

Camp Fircom offers employment opportunities to young people over the summer. Most of the staff are college and university students, many of whom have come up through the leadership program. Staff are chosen for their experience, enthusiasm and special skills; Camp Fircom requires all staff and volunteers to be creative and resourceful.

The staff is chosen through an application process that begins early in the new year. All staff applications are reviewed and interviews are organized as soon as possible. Each person must supply two verifiable references and submit to a Criminal Records check prior to the start of employment.
